Kua Bay Residence

North Kona Coast, Hawai‘i

Designed on a 29,000 square foot lot, this 6,000 square foot private residence in the historic Manini'o Wali area on the North Kona Coast of Hawai'i, maximizes it's use of property for this four bedroom home.

The primary living pavilion which includes open gathering and dining spaces with a master bedroom wing is focuses on jewel-like Kua Bay below. Entering the auto court at the upper level of the site, a stone garden path leads alongside the guest cottages which are oriented toward the Kohala Mountain and the internal garden to the living pavilion. Upon entering the living pavilion, the room immediately opens onto a large covered lanai wrapped with an infinity edge pool.

Craftsman-like in its design, the architecture is reminiscent of the classic Hawaiian beach cottage. A limited palette of finish materials such as cedar timber ceilings, travertine stone with Cumuru wood floors, local Ohia wood millwork and cabinetry are used. Pocketed doors provide large wall openings to embrace views and gardens.
