Kuki‘o Beach Club
North Kona, Hawai‘i
Located within 650 oceanfront acres on the North Kona Coast of Hawaii's Big Island, the private residential club community of Kuki'o was conceived as having an architectural character inspired from ancient island cultures of Hawai‘i and the Pacific Rim. Conceptually reminiscent of 20th century Hawaiian beach clubs, the facilities were broken down into separate pavilions carefully sited for the "naturalness" of a village settlement.
The exterior design, using very few materials, is purposely simple to enhance open tropical living. The use of thatched roofs as a strong sense of island shelter, works with lava stone walls, off-white plaster walls and tropical woods to convey cool solace and a club environment. The interior finishes and details are designed with a character of simplicity and tropical sophistication.
The name "Kuki‘o", meaning "Ponds of Rising Waters", comes from the anchialine ponds along the beach where Ancient Hawaiians would stock fish for times when ocean fishing was unsafe.
