Pahinahina Residence

Stretching along the South Kohala Coast at historic Ka‘upulehu, this 18,000 sq. ft. home is designed for casual tropical living and intended to support the closeness of the family and future extended family. Features designed within the main hale to achieve this objective include formal gathering and dining areas and a large central kitchen with an adjacent family room. Two other hales, separated by tropical gardens and water features, complete the home; one holding bedrooms suites, the other for a recreation and theater. Garden pathways take the place of traditional hallways. Deep covered lanais provide protective shade for the interior spaces and outdoor living area with views to the ocean.

The architectural design concept is one of a series of tropical pavilions amidst lush gardens. The main hale with the family gathering areas and master suite have a distinctive roof design with a series of undulating eyebrows over the lanais. The owner's desire for the design to incorporate curves has been translated into the use of curved segments from the site walls into the stone walls and detailing throughout the home. Undercurrents of Japanese design sensibilities in the detailing evoke a quiet elegance and composition. Materials for the home were selected in support of the architecture and in consideration for longevity and low maintenance. Chamfered recycled teak shingles are used on the roof, the exterior walls are designed with a subtle lavender/grey cast plaster and sandstone stone walls; the floors are a blend of limestone tiles and wood floors. The ceilings are clear cedar wood on top of teak beams. Interior walls are clear teak. The doors and windows are fabricated with teak.
