Seaside Hale with Surfing Fisherman

North Kona, Hawai‘i

Mark de Reus, in association with Hart Howerton, designed this five bedroom home overlooking Kikaua Bay. The 8,000 sq. ft. plan organizes the home with three separate buildings around a long shady internal garden giving the main living space and lanai full direct views of the ocean.

The theme of water was brought alongside the living areas with a swimming pool engaging the floor plan on one side, and a reflecting pool at the interior garden on the other. Hawaiian and Pacific Rim craftsmanship are seen in the details from the exposed wood beams at the eaves and ceiling, to the carved stone artwork, intricately carved wood doors inspired from Bali, playful colors in the plaster walls, coconut columns, and rich tropical woods.

The architectural concept of the home was to reinterpret island architecture incorporating both traditional Hawaiian and Balinese sensibilities. The owners requested that the home be playful in the use of color, and casual in feel.

The home was featured in the May 2007 issue of Architectural Digest and in HGTV's film feature "Amazing Waterfront Homes".
