Tidepool Hale
Within this Hawaiian resort community, on a site with significant constraints and perched over a tidal pool and a dramatic rugged black lava coast, we used the concept of folded origami-like roof planes to meet the needs for tropical shelter while creating a sculptural mix of interior volume and bringing light to the inside. The folded planes continue into the decks, pools and landscape for seamless continuity.
Floating on a reflecting pool, the entry gallery is designed to display significantly sized artwork and continues to the main gathering area alongside an exterior lap pool. The pared-down minimal palette of materials in this gallery sets the tone for the finishes in the rest of the home.
In addition to the normal requirements for family lifestyle needs, the client's program required large walls for display of minimalism and abstract art. Large roof overhangs protect outdoor living areas focused on the coastal views to the South.
